Why do we have a nose? It just sticks out and gets in the way.

Dear Sharon:

Exactly! But noses are remarkable! They help make you look like you -- and hold your glasses up (if you wear them). Not only does your nose breathe in air, filter it and warm it, but you smell through it. And not only do you get to smell odors as they waft through the air and are inhaled up into your nose -- but you get to smell the odors from the food you eat. And that's very important!

That's because if you didn't get to smell the food you eat, you wouldn't "taste" much of it either! In fact, the flavor of food comes more from your sense of smell through your nose than it does from your sense of taste! Ever have a really drippy cold and stuffed up nose? What did food taste like? Didn't taste like much, I bet....

It helps that your nose is stuck where it is on your face, hanging out over your mouth. You get to inhale odors from your food before you begin to gnaw on it; and you also get to smell your food as you chew. That's because incredibly tiny molecules of chemicals from the food you're grinding up float up to your nasal passages which open up at the back of your mouth, above your throat.

Lucky for you humans that your mouth and nose are connected, don't you think? Otherwise, you might not crave pizza or french fries the way you do!

Signed,

Wendell
