Dear Black and Blue:
Underneath your skin, you have lots of tiny blood vessels that bring blood to all parts of your
body. When you fell, some of these tiny blood vessels broke and leaked blood into your skin
tissues. But don't worry. Blood vessels heal quickly. The blood that leaked out, however, stays a
little longer. It's that leaked blood that turns those pretty colors from red to black to blue to
yellow !?! Slowly, you'll find your skin turning back to its normal color as white blood blood
cells and chemicals gobble up the leaked blood, cell by cell by cell.
Now, if you wacked yourself really hard, your bruise may have been accompanied by heat,
redness and swelling. These were caused by a chemical your body made called histamine which brings
lots of warm blood to the affected area to help it heal. In the future, kid, do try to be careful!
