I read in the newspaper about how a man whose kidneys weren't working. His brother saved the man's life by giving him one of his own kidneys. What are kidneys? How did the man "give" his brother one of his kidneys? And isn't this man now going to die?

Dear Sean

Some of you humans can be slugs, but humans can also be very considerate people! One of the amazing things about you humans is that even though you have two kidneys working all the time, in a pinch, one kidney, if working properly, can do the trick. It's certainly better to have two working in their body so that if one doesn't work right, they still have the other. But these brothers will both, hopefully, do just fine!

This man did a wonderful thing for his brother. He had an operation in which one of his kidneys, those fist-sized organs towards the back and just above the waist, was removed. Doctors then operated on the brother, took out one of the kidneys that wasn't working properly, and very carefully replaced it with the new kidney which they carefully attached to all the appropriate tubes and vessels. Hopefully, the new kidney started to work doing all the important work of kidneys. That work includes cleaning the blood to get rid of the chemical waste products that the body is always making and making sure that the chemical balance in the body is correct. Thank goodness for kidneys! Without them, your body would poison itself with the chemicals it makes!

Signed,

Wendell
