I have a wart on my middle finger. I didn't ask to have one, but here it is. What caused it and will it go away?
Signed, Worried Willie

Worried Willie:

Ah, warts they're nothing to get worried about! Like calluses, they're just little thickened patches of skin. But unlike calluses, they aren't caused by hard wear and tear on your skin. Your skin cells are always replacing themselves. But, in the case of a wart, a virus has come along and is confusing the skin cells around it. The virus is telling these cells to make more and more and more new skin cells. Soon there are too many for your skin to lie flat and a little bump, a wart develops.

If you think you have a wart, show your parents. They may want to have a doctor take a look at it. And if it really bothers you, a doctor can remove it. But, in the long run, your body's white cells will, in all likelihood, gobble up the virus, and your wart will wear away. Don't be impatient! It may take at least several weeks for that to happen. And, in the meantime, don't be surprised if you discover your single wart has developed into a few more while you're waiting....

And Willie, while your wart may look like a pile of dead skin, it's not. Warts have blood vessels and are part of your living skin! So for goodness sake, don't pick at it!

Oh, one more thing. Worms don't get warts. Just another reason why a worm's life is not such a bad one!

Signed,

Wendell
