My toothpaste has flouride. What is it?
Signed, Julia

Dear Julia:

Fluoride is a mineral and just one of many minerals that is sometimes naturally found in water supplies. The majority of dentists have come to believe that fluoride makes the enamel in teeth become stronger and better able to resist decay. That's why many water supply systems actually put fluoride in their water if it isn't found there naturally. It's also why many toothpastes contain fluoride and why dentists even apply it directly to teeth. I'm sure you'll agree it never hurts to prevent cavities.

Signed,

Wendell
