I was wondering: can I breathe and eat at same time?
Signed, Charlie

Dear Charlie:

The answer is nope, you can't! You have two tubes running from the top of your throat: a windpipe that takes air to your lungs and an esophagus which takes food to your stomach.

So--what keeps food from going down the wrong tube? Thankfully, your body comes with a trap door which slams down on the windpipe when you eat so that food can't go down your windpipe and head straight for your lungs.

However, it IS possible for you, to swallow some air. And, if you do, you may find yourself sending that air right back up in a big belch.

Signed,

Wendell
