Now here's an experiment with a-peel! You'll see what we mean when you create sparkly fireworks with a lemon rind.

What you'll need:
  • matches
  • a candle
  • a fresh lemon rind
What to do:
  1. Light a candle (since you'll be using a flame, be sure a grown-up is around in case you need help).

  2. Cut a thin slice of rind off a lemon.

  3. Hold the outside of the rind near the flame and squeeze the inside surfaces together.
What happens:

Tiny fireworks appear between the rind and the candle flame!

Why this happens:

All oils can catch fire easily, and lemon rind contains tiny pockets of oil. When you squeeze the rind, you break the skin and cause these oil pockets to squirt out. The lemon oil then burns with a brief but bright sparkle when it hits the flame and ignites.
