Tell your friends that they have no taste and they've lost their senses! Then show them
why with this activity, where they won't be able to taste the difference between an apple, an
onion, and a potato.
What you'll need:
- a handkerchief (or anything that can serve as a blindfold)
- small pieces of apple, onion, and potato
What to do:
Place a blindfold around your friend's eyes. Make your friend hold his/her nose, then place a small
piece of apple, potato, or onion on the center of his/her tongue. Ask your friend to identify the
piece just by taste and without chewing. Do the same thing with the other two pieces of food.
What happens:
Your friend won't be able to taste the difference between a piece of apple, onion, and
potato!
Why this happens:
Your taste buds are tiny organs on your tongue that identify four basic tastes: salt,
sweet, sour, and bitter. Since the center of your tongue has fewer taste buds than any other part
of the tongue, it's hard to recognize foods that are only placed there.
Our sense of taste is actually a combination of the taste, smell, and texture of
foods. This activity gets rid of a person's sense of smell and texture, leaving your friends with a
mystery in their mouth!
