Madeira Cockroach
(scientific name: Rhyparobia maderae)
Madeira cockroaches stink, for real. You see, when a Madeira roach thinks it's being
threatened, it lets off an awful odor. Pew! You really believe something died!
It took lots of perseverance -- and a nose that stopped smelling -- to stay and talk to this
Madeira Cockroach instead of running away.
What did I learn from my friend?
This roach is large and sluggish. It probably originated in Africa, but it was first reported
to be from Madeira, an island in the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Portugal.
Once the Madeira Cockroach calmed down and stopped stinking up the place, we enjoyed a nice
meal of rotten fruit. For an extra boost of protein, we split a bug.
