Teaching Standards -- Scope and Sequence

When you and your class use the resources of The Yuckiest Site on the Internet and the suggested activities in these units, you'll be helping your students meet important national standards and benchmarks. The content standard strands summarized below are from McREL, the Mid-continent Regional Education Laboratory in Aurora, Colorado. McREL is one of ten regional educational laboratories dedicated to improving the quality of education for all students.

Specific grade level benchmarks for each content strand are available at the McREL web site.

Science

Standard 4: The student knows about the diversity and unity that characterize life.

Standard 5: The students understands the genetic basis for the transfer of biological characteristics from one generation to the next.

Standard 6: The student knows the general structure and functions of cells in organisms.

Standard 7: The student understands how species depend on one another and on the environment for survival.

Standard 8: The student understands the cycling of matter and flow of energy through the living environment.

Standard 14: The student understands the nature of scientific knowledge.

Standard 15: The student understands the nature of scientific inquiry.

Standard 16: The student understands the scientific enterprise.

Language Arts

Standard 4: The student gathers and uses information for research purposes.

Standard 7: The student demonstrates competence in the general skills and strategies for reading a variety of informational texts.

Mathematics

Standard 4: The student understands and applies basic and advanced properties of the concepts of measurement.

Standard 6: The student understands and applies basic and advanced concepts of statistics and data analysis.

Technology

Standard 2: The student knows the characteristics and uses of computer software programs.

Standard 3: The student understands the relationships among science, technology, society, and the individual.
